So my plan is to DIY my own version of an art history foundation through immersing myself in exhibitions, books and courses over a year. I’m creating a physical space to experiment with my creative practice. And I have a couple of informal supervisors for art conversation over dinner. I’m using Are.na to keep a record of inspiration and practice.

Here I chart my experience of creating a DIY one year art foundation course from March 2023-24. I’m calling it irregular because it’s a departure from my usual. I’ve chosen a one year constraint to give me focus and momentum. I chart it here so I have a record of the experience and hold myself to account. I hope it might also be useful to anyone else thinking of doing something similar.

As a teenager, my school convinced me to do an English degree even though my passion was for art. Over the years I’ve imagined what might have happened if I’d followed the creative instincts of my 18 year old self. Recently it’s occurred to me that I can curate my own art foundation and get the fix I’ve been dreaming of ever since I left school.
